THE newly formed Dan Messore Standards Trio, featuring Dan Messore, Liz Ecell, and Paula Gardiner, delivered an exceptional debut performance at Narberth Jazz, showcasing a master class in swinging jazz.
This ensemble made their first appearance together, marking the start of an exciting collaboration. Their arrival generated considerable excitement as they were introduced to the audience at the Plas Hotel in Narberth on March 19.
This exceptional trio delivered a master class in swinging jazz. Their musical artistry was received with enthusiastic applause, reflecting the audience's appreciation and acclaim for their skill and synergy.

Featured a blend of jazz standards and celebrated compositions, the setlist offered listeners both familiarity and innovation. Among the classics performed were ‘The Sunny Side of the Street’ and ‘Taking a Chance on Love’. The trio also explored pieces by jazz legends, including Monk’s ‘Criss Cross’ and ‘Green Chimneys’, Mingus’s ‘Fables of Faubus’, Duke Ellington’s ‘Isfahan’—serving as a poignant reminder of gentler times when Ellington toured Persia—and Lester Young’s ‘Jumping with Symphony Sid’.
The trio included Sam Rivers’ ‘Beatrice’, demonstrating their versatility and deep appreciation for the jazz idiom.
For the encore, the musicians chose Nick Cave’s ‘Into My Arms’, providing a moving conclusion to an inspiring evening.
Describing the trio’s performance as a master class is no exaggeration. The skills displayed by each member were both unique and exceptional, captivating the audience throughout the evening.
Dan Messore’s guitar work showcased a wide range of tone and volume, achieved without the use of electronic devices. His approach highlighted the instrument’s natural qualities, delivered with finesse and creativity.
Paula Gardiner’s bass playing demonstrated her profound jazz knowledge and nuance, adding depth and subtlety to the performance of the trio.
Liz Ecell, renowned for her sensitivity to live jazz, excelled on drums. Her playing explored the light, shade, and subtlety of the genre, proving once again her exceptional command of the idiom.
Narberth Jazz’s next event will be on April 16 at the Plas Hotel, featuring The Transatlantic Hot Club.
