The vandalism of English language road signs across Carmarthenshire has been condemned.

In recent days, there have been several reports of road signs being targeted in locations including St Clears and Burry Port. In each case, the English language place name was obscured deliberately.

St Clears, one of the targeted towns, is an Anglo-Norman settlement founded in the 12th Century.

Its respective Welsh language translation “Sancler” - is taken from the original English language name. While the English language place name was covered in spray paint, the Welsh translation was not targeted.

Welsh Conservatives Senedd member Andrew RT Davies said: “These attacks, presumably carried out by Welsh separatist activists, are disgraceful.

“The English language is central to Welsh culture. Attempts to erase it are completely unacceptable.’
