The Dragon Darwin Experience has successfully launched its new pilot workshop, Mission VR: Launch into the Universe, engaging 155 young people so far from schools and youth groups across Pembrokeshire.

Participants have included Haverfordwest Explorers, Ysgol Bro Gwaun during their Enrichment Wednesday programme, Prendergast Community School, Narberth Community Primary School, and Broad Haven Primary School.

This innovative workshop introduces pupils to the wonders of space through an accessible and engaging STEM experience. Each session begins with an introductory talk from local astrophysicist Dr Mark Smith which is either a journey through astrophysics from the Big Bang to the present day, or an overview of the International Space Station (ISS) and its role in modern science.

Pupils then take part in a round-robin of space-related activities, culminating in a cutting-edge virtual reality experience, where:

  • Using the Spheres VR application, participants explore planets, black holes and cosmic phenomena through data sonification, where electromagnetic waves from celestial bodies are transformed into music.
  • Alternatively, pupils step inside the Mission: ISS VR simulation, where they experience microgravity, undertake a virtual spacewalk, and learn about daily life and scientific research aboard the International Space Station.

The pilot has been met with excellent feedback, highlighting its ability to spark curiosity, deepen understanding of space science, and demonstrate the exciting intersections of physics, astronomy, engineering, and creative technologies.

Samantha Williams from the Dragon Darwin Experience stated: "Mission VR has opened a doorway to the universe for young people across Pembrokeshire.

“By combining immersive technology with real scientific insight, we’re helping pupils see that space exploration isn’t just something that happens far away, it’s something they can be part of, learn from, and be inspired by. The enthusiasm we’ve seen so far has been incredible."
