TWO outdoor pursuits experts from Pendine are planning a holiday - to take on an endurance challenge. Gethin Williams, manager at Carmarthenshire County Council's Outdoor Education Centre in Pendine, and Simon Lane, the centre's senior instructor, will be taking part in the South Africa Cape Endurance Challenge during October half- term, 2006. It involves six days of canoeing, running and cycling around the Western Cape. They are aiming to raise a minimum £5,300 for 'Children Today', a charity that buys specialised equipment for local children with special needs. Gethin and Simon are paying for the trip themselves, but have already started raising funds for the charity. Today (Friday), they are holding a Fun Day and Car Boot Sale at the Education Centre in Pendine. The event will start at around 10 am. The charge is £5 a car for the boot sale and the gates open at 7 am. For a small fee, people can have a go at archery, abseiling, climbing and a zip wire. There will also be a bouncy slide for the children. Refreshments will be available at a separate event 100m up the road at the Hawthorn Cottage open day. Gethin said: "The endurance challenge is something I have wanted to do for some time. We are both outdoor pursuits instructors and will be doing for charity what we do every day in work. "Closer to the date we will be doing extra training. We will be canoeing a couple of times a week from Pendine to Tenby. "We are really looking forward to it. We have spoken to a few schools already and there are a lot of schools keen to do events such as non-uniform days to raise funds for Children Today." Carmarthenshire County Council education executive board member, Clr. Mary Thomas, said: "I would like to wish Gethin and Simon well. I am sure they will be well up to the challenge. They are doing it for a very worthwhile cause."
