A roadworker with over 31 years service with local authorities in Pembrokeshire has retired.

Brian Harries, of St. James Street, Narberth, is one of a select band who has worked both for the old Pembrokeshire County Council and its modern day equivalent, with a dozen years of service for Dyfed County Council sandwiched in between.

Among the schemes he has worked on since June, 1970, are the Redberth road improvement and the redesign of the old Begelly roundabout.

Friends and colleagues said goodbye to Narberth-born Brian at a presentation recently in County Hall.

In recognition of his many years as an official with the Transport and General Workers' Union, regional industrial organiser, Danny Fellows, presented Brain with a special trophy for his 'momentous service' to the 'T. and G.'.

Local Assembly Member Christine Gwyther also attended, as did the county council's director of finance and leisure, Mark Lewis, and head of personnel, Francis Maull.

Brian, 65, won't be twiddling his thumbs in retirement. His main interest is soccer and he is a life vice-president of the James Williams Pembrokeshire League, of which he is a former chairman and president.

He is also a life member of the West Wales FA, chairman of the Royal British Legion in Pembrokeshire and vice-chairman of the Narberth branch, and longstanding member of Narberth Town Council.

A former Mayor of the town, he was wished a happy retirement by his fellow councillors at their monthly meeting on Tuesday night.
