The name 'Emmanuel' means 'God with us', which made 'Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is Here' an appropriate theme for Sunday's service in Manorbier. Rev. Peter Richmond asked "how many people think 'it doesn't matter what sin I indulge in; God will always use me and bless me'?" "It's sad that there are many churches with that mistaken belief," he said, "and ministers are not exempt." Ironically, religion without God can appear successful. People might enjoy their services more if they didn't have to face the scrutiny of a holy King, he suggested. Peter cited Samson as an example of someone who did not realise that God's strength had left him, and the Jewish exiles in Ezekiel's day still thought that God was with them; only their prophet realised that God was tired of their false worship, idolatry and wickedness, and had seen his glory departing. Looking to the future, however, brought Ezekiel hope as he saw "the glory of the Lord filling the temple." Peter continued: "When we meet together, we have the wonderful promise of Jesus - 'where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them'. "If you listen to God and put his words into practice, then he lives in you; you are never alone: he comes with you to church, he watches television with you, and knows when you argue or gossip at home. Everywhere you go you can turn into the house of God." In addition to the message, there was a time of sung worship and prayers. There were opportunities for special prayer requests to be made at the end of the service. The service concluded with drinks and conversation, while the children's club learnt about Gideon's army. Old friends were amongst the visitors who received a warm welcome. Emmanuel Gospel Church meets in Manorbier (near the garden centre) at 10.15 every Sunday morning.
