After a time of lively and heartfelt praise in song, believers shared bread and wine in the communion service on Sunday morning at Emmanuel Gospel Church. "Our unity is not in minor issues, but in Christ Jesus, because we're all one body of believers - and that's wonderful." The pastor then introduced the preacher, Eddie Lewis, a retired minister from Cardiff. He had mentioned where he was to be preaching to one of the locals, he said, whereby the response had been, "Oh! The happy clappers!" What could Eddie say but, "yes, that's us!"? According to Eddie, years ago groups of teenagers from Cardiff used to hold camps in the Manorbier Hall that is now Emmanuel Gospel Church. They came down once a year and redecorated it. Now those who can remember taking part are thrilled to learn of the hall's transformation and that it is being put to such worthwhile use. "It's lovely to feel the blessing of the Lord in the meeting," he noted, adding, "this church is one with a big future." Eddie's wife Marion sung 'Hand in Hand with Jesus', a song which states, in its simple old-fashioned way, "walking thus, I cannot stray." Marion accompanied her tuneful voice with a 16-bar autoharp. "The best thing in my life is Jesus," said Marion, "and I will praise his name for ever." The theme for Eddie's message was "Where is my guest room?" When Jesus was about to share his last Passover meal with the disciples, he told them to follow a man carrying water to a house and ask the house owner: "the master asks, 'where is my guest room?'" Amid many anecdotes and words of wisdom, Eddie showed how Jesus's birth, ministry, death and resurrection was planned before the beginning of the world, and so was this guest room. Some songs talk about Jesus having a borrowed stable, a borrowed cross and a borrowed tomb. You could have said that the upper room was on loan too, but the truth is, said the preacher, Jesus owns everything: "Nothing was created except through him" and "he owns the cattle on a thousand hills." Eddie quoted the words of Jesus: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock..." He said that people can be in the building without being in the church if they have not experienced God's saving grace, but even if they are part of his church, they need to be living in the sanctuary - the holiest place where there is an intimacy with God, opening their doors in total surrender and Spirit-filled worship. Many people came up for prayer at the end of the meeting. Everyone was told to speak words of praise to God while his healing was being claimed for each situation. Don't pass off the opportunity of seeing this good work for yourself. Services are held every Sunday at 10.15 am. Telephone Jonathan Fiddy for further details on 01646 681805.
