"Faith needs to be worked out in obedience," said Pastor Jonathan Fiddy on Sunday morning. "Jesus, with all the authority of one who has risen from the dead gave the commission: 'Go and make disciples... teach them to observe all the things I commanded you'." Rev. Fiddy recalled more words of Jesus: "If you love me, keep my commandments." This is the promise to those who love the Lord and keep his commands: God will love them, dwell with them and give them his strength to live the Christian life. "It's not enough to have experiences of God, to prophesy or do miracles; you can only be a part of God's kingdom if you obey his word," the pastor continued. "Of course, there are times when we slip up and choose to do wrong, but God wants to train us in obedience. It's our desire to please him that counts. "Some people think that the Holy Spirit is grieved by a disorganised service, or a song out of place. However, it's only sin that grieves the Spirit." Jonathan listed some of the ways in which Christians can follow God's teaching. These include getting rid of lies, anger and deceit; not stealing, but working hard - so there is something earned that can be given to those in need. "Sexual sin, uncouth joking, envy and idolatry are things which should never be seen in the Church," he said. "The Bible tells us not to associate with people who do these things yet call themselves Christians." He finished a challenging message with some words of practical advice, urging his listeners to study the Bible, live by God's standards, and keep meeting with other Christians. "It's when a sheep is away from the fold that the wolf is likely to attack," he warned. In a post-modern world of political correctness and seemingly no moral absolutes, Emmanuel Gospel Church and others like them are preaching Christ's uncompromising message of love, light and upright living.
