Election fever has started to grip the county this week after nominations for the various seats on the county, town and community councils were officially announced.

Voting day is Thursday, June 10, and here the Observer takes a look at the 'runners and riders' in this year's contests.

PEMBROKESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

It will be a battle between two current town councillors when electors in the Tenby South ward go to the polls after it was revealed former Mayor of the town, Christine Brown, who represents the Labour Party, and Mike Evans (Independent) will be contesting the seat made vacant following the retirement of longstanding councillor and current authority chairman, Mickey Folland.

In the Tenby North ward, sitting member, Michael Williams, who represents Plaid Cymru, faces a tough fight against the town's Mayor-elect, Sue Lane, and John Hughes (Independent), a former president of the town's Chamber of Trade for Tourism and current chairman of the Tenby and District Athletic Association.

In Amroth, John Anthony Brinsden (Liberal Democrat), Norman Spence (Labour) and Peter Treharne Waddilove will be doing battle, while in Carew there is a four-way contest between David James Neale, Derek Lloyd, current representative Norman Parry (Independent) and planning consultant Mike Thorne, of the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, in East Williamston, Graham Charles Thomas is standing against Jim Codd, Independent, and for the Kilgetty/Begelly seat, postmaster John Murphy is being opposed by Howard Geoffrey Horton-Jones (Plaid Cymru) and Michael James Weaver, of the Liberal Democrats.

Manorbier sees Pat Griffiths (Independent) battling to keep her seat against another Independent candidate, Malcolm Calver (Independent), and Tony Wales (Labour), while in Lampeter Velfrey, the nominations are Frederick Gerald George Luckman and David Simpson, both Independents.

Seeking re-election in Martletwy is Robert Marks Lewis, who will be challenged by Sarah Elizabeth Credland and John Richard Gossage (Liberal Democrat).

In Narberth, Labour's David Watkins, who has held the seat for nine years, faces opposition from Civic Week's Wynne Evans and the town's Deputy Mayor, Henry Langen, while in the Narberth Rural division, Lilian Claire Narbett, of the Liberal Democrats, is up against veteran councillor William Davies, an Independent.

In Penally, hotelier Graham Fry (Independent) is opposing sitting member Plaid Cymru's Carol Cavill, while in nearby Saundersfoot, former county council chairman, Rosemary Hayes, will be looking to retain her seat, despite challenges from Phil Baker (Liberal Democrat) and Arthur Ronald Williams (Independent).

CARMARTHENSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

Across the border, Whitland's seat on Carmarthenshire County Council is being fought by William Conwil Harries and James Morris Morgan (Independent).

TOWN COUNCIL

ELECTIONS

There will be no election in Tenby, as only 12 nominations came forward for the 13 seats, but there will be one new face in the council chamber, licensee of the Sun Inn, Damian Brown, a former member of Manorbier Community Council.

He will be joining current members Marilyn Ann Cray, Kerri Anne Durham, Thomas John Trevor Hallett, Susan Margaret Lane, Paul David Rapi, Maureen Dorothy Ward, Christine Elizabeth Brown, Philip Rolfe Crockford, Michael Llewellyn Evans (Independent), Patricia Margaret Rossiter and Caroline Thomas.

Not seeking re-election are two of the council's stalwarts Mickey Folland and Andrew Rees.

The people of Narberth, however, will be getting a chance to vote for members on the urban ward.

Nominations are Wynne Edward Evans, John Eric Feetham, William Henry Langen, Ruth Parry Platt, Suzanne Kay Radford-Smith, Susan Mary Rees (Independent), Anthony Byron Richards and Colin David Williams.

In the other wards, David Gordon Norcross is the only candidate for Crinow, while Valerie Judith Bradley and Owain Griffith Martin are standing for the rural ward.

There is also no contest in Whitland, where nominations have filled only just over half of the 13 seats.

Standing in the north ward are Elizabeth Rosemary Dianne Evans and William Conwil Harries, while in the south the five nominees are Jean Ann Jenkins, Thomas Ronald John Jenkins, Gareth James Lee, Valmai Maureen Phillips and Deborah Anne Rutter.
