Road salt supplies in Pembrokeshire have received a boost following the berthing of a vessel at the Port of Pembroke in Pembroke Dock.

The cargo ship, Global Hermes, arrived from Egypt this week carrying 6,800 tonnes of evaporated marine salt.

The shipment - organised by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Welsh Local Government Association - is being divided between local authorities in Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.

Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for highways and planning, Clr. Jamie Adams, said the delivery of 2,000 tonnes of salt brought his authority's reserves up to 3,200 tonnes.

"We are also expecting a further delivery from our usual supplier in Cheshire before the end of the season," he added.

"This means we will then have access to a sufficient supply of salt for use on the county's roads."

Clr. Adams said the council was grateful to Pembroke Port - a division of Milford Haven Port Authority - and its business development executive, Catherine Smith, for using her international connections to facilitate the shipment.

"We are delighted to have been of service to the local communities in delivering this important cargo," she said.
