Engaging learners and exciting them with an innovative curriculum is always a priority at Tavernspite and Templeton Primary schools. Inspired by the powerful and emotive Blue Planet documentary, pupils decided that they wanted to learn more about marine pollution; a potent issue for tourism driven Pembrokeshire.

Just before half-term, both schools enjoyed a successful theme day titled ‘Life Below Water.’ Pupils utilised both literacy and numeracy skills in order to learn more about the topic.

Examples of class work include persuasive posters; using multiplication skills to calculate how many years it would take different plastics to biodegrade; interpreting graphs and information linked to marine litter and calculating the weight of plastics in the sea. Pupils also created plastic sea-life sculptures as part of a whole school competition. Tavernspite CP School was able to raise £170 for the Size of Wales charity which will be doubled and used on valuable forest projects.

Following the ‘Life Below Water’ day, Tavernspite received a special visit from Peter Davies, chair of the Marine Action Group for Wales, who was keen to find out more about the pupils’ learning and to support the Federation moving forward with the topic. Mr. Davies was impressed by the pupils’ learning and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Both schools are dedicated to contributing towards ‘Wales Clean Seas’ plans and are looking forward to a federation beach clean in the near future.
