St. Govans Coastguard Rescue Team visited Golden Manor Nursery Pembroke on Thursday to explain how to stay safe at the beach and demonstrate the equipment and service that they, as volunteers, provide to the local community.

They were joined by RNLI Angle and spent the morning showing the modern equipment both organisations have provided their volunteers in order to save lives and protect the community on the coast and further out to sea.

The best part was the chance to get hands on the equipment when the playground witnessed a tropical storm of lifejackets, ropes, drysuits and blue lights.

Amanda James, manager of Golden Manor, said: “It was great for the children to see the people that give up their own time at the chirp of a pager, to rescue anyone who needs help on our coasts. They were certainly impressed when they found the blue lights and sirens!”

Gareth Jones, station officer of the St. Govans team of Bosherston, said: “Showing the children what we do was great fun. At the end of our visit, we were presented with some hand-made thank you cards - with the glue still drying. We always enjoy the opportunity to explain what we do as volunteers, and today we certainly had our most enthusiastic crowd. We’ve been asked back and we will certainly be looking forward to that day.”
