The new federation between Tavernspite and Templeton Schools was officially launched in style.

Open evenings were held at the two schools so that each school community could familiarise themselves with the other.

This is considered very important since the schools are now formally federated and a true partnership has been established.

Federated arrangements between schools are becoming more commonplace these days, although this is the first formal federation in Pembrokeshire.

Arriving at the schools it felt more like coming to a wedding as the schools were duly decorated with buntings, balloons and banners to fully celebrate the union.

In both schools, the halls were packed out as the interested audiences heard presentations from chairs of governors Dr. Barry Walters and Mr. Nicholas Davies who outlined the journey the two schools had taken over the last two years and the reasons for the great success of this federation.

Clr. Sue Perkins, cabinet member for education and children’s services, also addressed the audience on behalf of Pembrokeshire County Council.

The highlight of the evening was a choir performance made up of pupils from both schools - a true federated choir who performed brilliantly.

After the formalities, everyone had the chance to have some refreshments and an informal tour around both schools and their grounds.

Great pride was shown by the school communities and a very positive feeling was clearly evident.

It is well-documented that both schools have shown clear improvements since the federation began 18 months ago with increased pupil numbers, raised standards and enhanced reputations. It is hoped that this will bring a wave of positivity to other federations across the Pembrokeshire.

The innovative federation model employed at Tavernspite and Templeton Schools has been highlighted by Estyn, The Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, as an example of best practice and is to be used as a potential blueprint for other federations across Wales.
