The pupils and community of Saundersfoot CP School have been working together to assemble school bags for Ukrainian children attending schools in Pembrokeshire.

This term the school welcomed a pupil from Kyiv in Ukraine to Year 5, the class provided a bag with all the necessary resources for a pupil to welcome them and to help them succeed and learn in Saundersfoot school and their new country.

“This was such a success, we decided to scale up the project and provide school bags for any Ukrainian pupils enrolling in schools in Pembrokeshire,” said Headteacher Mr. Nick Allen.

“We really believed as a community this project would help in a meaningful and genuine way.”

“We asked families to donate - rucksacks (unisex, plain colours ideally) lunch boxes, drink bottles, pencils, pencil cases, pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers, colouring pencils or felt tip pens, picture books and a note pad or colouring book and anything else that would benefit a pupil in this situation.

“I do need to thank all parents and carers who helped contribute to the project and especially Year 5 who helped put the school bags together,” he continued.

“An excited group of children represented the school as we handed them over to Darren Gilbert, a worker for the Pembrokeshire Ukrainian Scheme.

“Part of our school vision is to help our children be emotionally literate with wellbeing at the forefront of their education and this project certainly promotes that.

“We hope the school bags will help children from the Ukraine settle into their new life in Pembrokeshire,” added Mr. Allen.
