Pupils at Penrhyn Church in Wales VC School in Hundleton have adapted very well to their new school, says headteacher Mr. Clive Condon.
The pupils moved into their purpose-built £3.9 million primary school, which include an Early Years Unit for three-year-olds, at the beginning of January.
The new 120-place school was constructed as part of the amalgamation of Angle VC School, Stackpole VC School and Orielton CP School. It was funded jointly by Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government as part of the 21st Century Schools programme.
Mr. Condon said the pupils were enthusiastic about the additional facilities, extra space and new features like interactive panels in the classrooms and multi-use games courts.
“It’s a much bigger building than what the children were used to, but they all settled in very well,” he said.
“The main difference is all the extra space throughout the whole building, which they really like. They love the fact that all the classrooms have direct access to the playground and the large canopy outside which means they can go out when it’s raining and stay dry!
“They also really like the library, which can accommodate a whole class, and the opportunity to use our new food, science, design and technology room.”
The building has high environmental credentials achieving an excellent BREEAM rating, with key features include energy management systems, photovoltaic panels and LED lighting throughout.
Mr. Condon added: “The schools in Angle, Stackpole and Orielton were built in the Victorian era and designed for a very different education system.
“We’re not in a building which we have to work around, but in a building which is working with us,” he said.
