A campaign to promote good school attendance has been launched by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Pembrokeshire Attendance Awareness Week (held September 11-15) promotes the benefits of attending school regularly and aims to encourage good practice among schools.

To celebrate the launch, Pembrokeshire pupils competed to design a piece of artwork to adorn the front cover of the Pembrokeshire Attendance Handbook and accompanying posters, banners and badges.

The winning entry from the primary and secondary phase received a voucher in addition to vouchers for the schools where the successful entries came from.

The colourful posters will be printed for every school in the county.

Pembroke School pupil Ellie Davies designed the winning entry for secondary schools.

Her work forms the basis for the front cover of the new handbook and for banners, which were displayed around the county’s towns.

Ellie received a £50 Amazon voucher and Pembroke School will receive Amazon vouchers worth £150.

Llinos Reynish, Zoe McCarthy and Ioan Jones from Puncheston School combined to design the winning entry for primary schools with each receiving Amazon vouchers worth £30 with the school receiving vouchers worth £100.

Jenna Evans from Pembroke School received a highly commended status and a £25 Amazon voucher was presented for her efforts.

Jenna’s design may be used for future publicity in the area of attendance.

“Good school attendance is linked to better learning and greater success in the future and we want all pupils to strive towards that,” said cabinet member for education and lifelong learning Clr. David Lloyd.

“This booklet and the fantastic designs of the winning entries to the competition will highlight the importance of this to pupils throughout Pembrokeshire.

“We received an array of striking, colourful entries and I would like to thank schools and pupils for the effort made - it made the selection process to choose the winning entry extremely difficult yet their designs will help promote an important issue that affects all schoolchildren in the county.”
