Two new schools are opening their doors for the first time in Tenby next week.

One is the English-medium Tenby Church in Wales VC Primary School and the other is the Welsh-medium Ysgol Hafan Y Môr.

They replace the Tenby VC Infants and Tenby Junior schools and will cater for children between the ages of three and 11.

The two new schools represent an £8.37 million investment in education in the town and were built under the 21st Century Schools Programme - a collaboration between Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government who are sharing the funding.

The council’s cabinet member for the Welsh language, Huw George said: “This is an historic time for primary education in Tenby and particularly for the Welsh language in Pembrokeshire. Both ventures have our best wishes for the future.”

The Tenby Church in Wales school is a new build and was designed in-house by the county council’s own architects’ team. It will have 54 nursery pupils on its roll and 252 reception to Year 6 pupils.

The school’s eco features have resulted in it being rated as excellent by the BREEAM environmental accreditation method, and it is powered by a substantial number of photovoltaics which the children can see from their classrooms.  

The headteacher is Mr. John Palmer.

Ysgol Hafan Y Môr is the first of its kind in South Pembrokeshire and has been established in response to the growing demand for Welsh-medium education in the area.

Located in the extensively renovated former junior school, it will have 32 nursery pupils and 94 reception to Year 6 children.

Mrs. Victoria Hart-Griffiths has been appointed its headteacher.

Both schools are hosting a preview of their facilities for parents and pupils on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 6 - the day before they both open.
