HOLYROOD & ST TEILO’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
During the pandemic, to stop the spread of Covid-19, we were supposed to stay six feet apart when we were with other people. The term “social distancing” also helps explain what is going on in today’s gospel.
Jesus is not someone who kept his distance from others. He broke the religious norms of his day by inviting tax collectors and other sinners to follow him. He broke the social norms of his day by attracting people who were not Jewish, like the Samaritan woman in today’s gospel. He broke the health rules of his day by refusing to keep a social distance between himself and those with the highly contagious disease of leprosy.
The Gospel, the very core of the Church’s social teaching, challenges us today to open our minds and hearts to the people among us whose customs, language, looks are different. Jesus purposely used the Samaritans, who were the most hated enemies of the Jews, to make his point: that the salvation which comes through him, the living water, is for the whole world.
We experience the love of Jesus for ourselves when we turn to him in prayer every day, and especially here in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The same Jesus who met the Samaritan woman at the well meets us in this church. He speaks to us in his word, and he gives himself to us in the Eucharist, which is his life-giving Body and Blood.
Masses from St Teilo’s and Parish events can be viewed on-line from the parish website www.stteilostenby.co.uk. and in the Parish Newsletter. Tel. 01834 84269.
Hebron Baptist Church
This month there is much focus on women. The World Day of Prayer (organized by women from a different country each year) is followed by International Women’s Day and on Sunday we will celebrate Mothers’ Day.
Many mothers have willingly spent many hours supporting and encouraging their children to achieve their best.
Not only mothers care for children, relatives often take responsibility for children bereft of parents. Looking back on our formative years we can recall people who have encouraged and helped us.
Jesus never undermined women, whatever their circumstances, but always sought to bless and encourage them and give them hope. He was moved when he saw a widow crying as she accompanied her son’s coffin. Jesus raised her son from the dead and made her future secure (Mark 7:13-15).
After twelve years of suffering, a woman was healed immediately when she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment.
Speaking in the synagogue one day, Jesus saw a woman who had been unable to stand up straight for eight years. He called her to him. Moving was probably difficult, Jesus showed compassion declaring, ‘You are set free from your infirmity’ (Luke 13:10-13).
Jesus showed great patience with Salome and Martha when they interrupted him when he was speaking. Salome was anxious on her sons’ behalf and Martha was an anxious hostess (Matt 20:20-22, Luke 10:40,41).
As we show appreciation to mothers, women who have blessed our lives deserve appreciation too.

The Mother’s Day service on Sunday next March 19 will be at 10.45am followed by the Communion Service and will be conducted by the Rev’d Hugh Michael of Pembroke Dock.
A warm welcome is extended to everyone.
St Johns Church, Tenby
Last Sunday at St Johns, a warm welcome was given to Mr and Mrs John and Margaret Birch, Methodist Lay Preachers from the Wesley Church in Carmarthen. John accompanied all the hymns on the guitar. Bible readings were from Psalm 95, Exodus 17:1-7 and the Gospel of John 4:5-42.
Margaret asked if we jump to conclusions if we are faced with a difficulty or meet someone new? The Israelites complained to Moses that they were thirsty in the desert, even saying they were better off when slaves of the Egyptians. God enabled Moses to produce fresh water to flow from the rock. And in the Gospel reading, about the Samaritan woman at the Well, Jesus did not judge the woman even though he knew of her reputation. Jesus offered her the living water which we know is the word of God, the teachings of Jesus are all accessible to us as we worship God through the power of the Holy Spirit. This Samaritan woman realised that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God.
Margaret encouraged us to read the Scriptures each day, to renew our commitment to Jesus who accepts each one of us as we are, to share this life-giving water, our knowledge of Jesus with others. Come all who are thirsty for the love of God, with thanksgiving we find the living water that will refresh our souls.
Coffee and fresh Welsh cakes on sale every Wednesday, 9.30-12.30; on Mondays 2-4pm the craft Club meets. This Friday at 3pm the service of thanksgiving for the life of Mr Graham Powell. On Sunday the 11am worship will be led by the Reverend Stella Hayton. Everyone always welcome at St Johns.
Tenby Salvation Army
Over the past weeks Major Linda Read has been leading us in a study of the Prayer of Jabez, writes Irene Johnson. Although this is a short prayer found in the Bible it has a profound message in asking for strength to tell people of the love God.
We then moved on to thinking of young people in Salvation Army settings throughout the world. Many of these were in schools and homes run by the Salvation Army and we gave a special offering to help the Salvation Army work in these situations.
This week we thought about faith and trust in God in a meeting in which members of the congregation participated. As an example of trusting Connor fell backwards and was caught by his grandmother. He was able to do this because he knew and trusted her. We were encouraged to know and trust God in the same way.
Hymns on Sunday included ‘O for a thousand tongues to sing’ and, as a reminder of our Sunday School days, ‘Dare to be a Daniel’. Daniel was a man who trusted God wholeheartedly and stood strong against many trials to turn his back on him.
On Sundays our worship is at 10.30am. We are open for a Warm Space at 11am each Tuesday and for coffee on Thursdays at 10.30am. Everyone is welcome at any time. For more information, help or support contact Major Linda Read on 07776 965 567 or 01843 843329.
