Carmarthenshire County Council has today (November 25) issued a statutory notice, in accordance with Section 43 of the School Standards and Organisation Act 2013, proposing the discontinuation of Ysgol Llansteffan.
Members of the public may submit objections within 28 days of the date of publication until 23 December 2025. Objections can be made by completing the online survey; via email - [email protected] or in writing to: Mr Owain Lloyd, Director of Education and Leisure County Hall, Carmarthen, SA31 1JP.
The decision to issue statutory notice to Ysgol Llansteffan was agreed at a meeting of Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet on Monday, November 17, 2025.
If approved, the proposal will take effect from 31 August 2026, with the current catchment area of Ysgol Llansteffan re-designated and absorbed into the existing catchment area of Ysgol Llangain, also a Welsh-medium primary school.
Ysgol Llangain has sufficient capacity to educate pupils currently attending Ysgol Llansteffan, with no additional measures required. School transport would continue to be provided in line with the Council’s School Transport Policy and the secondary school transfer arranged would also remain the same.
Ysgol Llansteffan has been identified based on viability criteria set out within the Modernising Education Programme, approved by Cabinet in November 2024.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Glynog Davies, said: “We appreciate how difficult this situation is for those connected with Ysgol Llansteffan, and we wholeheartedly sympathise with the parents, staff, governors and local community.
We encourage anyone with views on the proposal to submit them during the objection period so they can be fully considered before any final decision is made.”
