Students from Tenby’s ‘Techno Team’ have received a boost from local councillors in their bid to win an award by showing their passion for science, technology and engineering.
The group of students ranging from years 7 to 11 from Tenby’s Greenhill School recently took part in the FIRST® Tech Challenge UK tournament run by FIRST® Tech Challenge UK, coming away as the coveted Judges Award Winners and with the Finalist Alliance Award.
The team has been holding weekly meetings since September, during which time they have designed, built and programmed a robot to take on a global challenge.
Pupils have relished the experience, and are excitedly looking forward to the next stage, where they will attend London’s Copper Box Arena in March where they will compete to represent the UK in the world championship in May, held in the USA, alongside 40,000 young people from 100 countries.
Writing about their achievements in a letter that came before Tenby town council at their meeting on Tuesday night, pupils Ieuan and Will from the Tenby Techno Team, said that they would greatly appreciate any support that could be provided towards the project.
“This project is based on more than just robots and technology - it helps promote real life skills. Remember we are the only team in Pembrokeshire and one of only four in Wales!” they explained.
Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown said that it was ‘brilliant’ that the students had done so well and that she’d like the town council to help them.
Councillors agreed to donate £250 to the Tenby Techno Team.
“Congratulations to the Techno Team on their success so far, it’s nice to see them doing so well and we wish them well for their semi-final in London,” said Clr. Mrs. Tracey Evans.
