Over 100 trees were planted on the school grounds of Penrhyn Church In Wales VC School, Hundleton when Volunteers from Valero’s Pembroke Refinery joined forces with staff and pupils to celebrate World Earth Day.

During a busy morning that also included a litter pick around the village, the species of trees planted included Spindle, Hornbeam, Cherry, Rowan, Alder, Crab Apple, Silver Birch and Field Maple.

It means every pupil at the school had the opportunity to name a tree after themselves to leave a legacy on the grounds that will never be forgotten.

Earth Day is an annual event each April that aims to demonstrate support for environmental protection and plays a big part in the refinery’s volunteer programme throughout the community.

In recent years, Valero volunteers have undertaken beach cleans and litter picks to celebrate the event and are no strangers to planting trees having planted close on 1,000 over the past year and a half around the refinery.

Vice President and General Manager at the refinery Mark Phair, said: “When I arrived at the school I was greeted by a chorus of birdsong that will be enriched by the trees that were planted. The students should be proud of what they achieved given the fruits of their labour will be visible for many years and we’re delighted to have played a part in that.”

Executive headteacher of the school, Mrs Julie Davies added: “This was an amazing opportunity for Penrhyn school pupils and playgroup to have their very own biggest plant on the planet. The pupils gained skills and knowledge and we look forward to working with Valero in the future.”
