Tavernspite Primary School has been awarded the prestigious European Green Flag for completing the Eco-Schools programme after two years of dedicated environmental improvement.
Pupils and staff proudly raised the flag on Tuesday in a special ceremony at the school, with a presentation by the Keep Wales Tidy Campaign.
A key feature of the Eco-Schools programme is that pupils play a major part in taking and acting upon decisions about their school environment.
After carrying out a thorough survey, the school's 'eco-committee' decided upon an action plan to tackle issues they saw as important. Actions included: recycling paper, plastic milk bottles and printer cartridges; composting fruit and vegetable waste; water and energy-saving campaigns; ways to reduce traffic problems outside the school; composing a school 'Eco-code' so that everyone can play their part in reducing litter and waste; linking with schools in Botswana for 'Global Citizenship'; healthy eating at breaktime, with no sweets or crisps.
It took nearly two years to put all parts of the Eco-Schools programme into place. Assessors from Keep Wales Tidy visited the school and found that the school had passed with flying colours.
