Sir, It is always interesting to track the origins of Tenby as a fashionable resort and I came across one reference recently of which I was not otherwise aware - although it may be well known to the better informed. In a letter dated June 14, 1802, the Rev. Sydney Smith, the famous Whig clergyman and correspondent, writing to the Honourable Caroline Fox, says "I wish you dear Miss Fox a very happy Summer - good sea bathing at Tenby." Caroline Fox, the sister of Lord Holland, was very much part of the Whig establishment and connected with the Greville family (Robert Fulke Greville, of course, built East Rock House). It was, presumably, through this latter connection that she became one of our early summer visitors.
