Fluellen Theatre Company's eagerly-awaited new production (in association with the Grand Theatre, Swansea) of Dylan Thomas's masterpiece Under Milk Wood comes to the De Valence, Tenby, on Thursday, April 22, at 7.30 pm, and will be the biggest and most ambitious production yet in the company's eight-year history. Artistic director Peter Richards was born in Swansea just after the Second World War and has always had a great affinity with Swansea's greatest writer, recognising in Thomas's works the people, places and vocal patterns of his own youth spent in the 'ugly, lovely town'. And of all Dylan Thomas's writings, his play, Under Milk Wood, is Peter's greatest love. "I've waited a long time to direct this truly wonderful piece," said Peter. In a career that has seen him direct a little under 100 plays in 36 years, he believes that this will be the pinnacle of his theatre directing experience. "Under Milk Wood is a brilliant piece of the theatre," continued Peter, "full of rich, vibrant writing and populated by some of the most memorable and best-loved characters in dramatic literature." And the Swansea connection does not end with the writer and the director. The set is being designed by Swansea-born Edward Thomas (the designer of Doctor Who and Torchwood), and the company has commissioned a new musical score from Welsh harpist Delyth Jenkins, who will be playing live. Heading the cast is Kevin Johns, who apart from creating a series of wonderful pantomime dames, presents his popular show every morning on Swansea Sound. Others in the cast include George Andrews, Alison John, Adrian Metcalfe, Claire Novelli, Dudley Owen and Bethan Thomas. And the production will also be featuring the voice of Dylan Thomas, himself. "The voice will be used sparingly," said Peter, "but so iconic is that amazing voice with its unique delivery, that I believe it will create genuine excitement for the audience to hear it."
