Last Friday (August 9) saw In the shrine of his blazing breast, readings from the works of, and works inspired by Dylan Thomas, held at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery.
The well-attended event was a mixture of familiar and not so familiar works by writers such as Raymond Garlick, Dannie Abse and Ralph McTell, as well as readings from writings by Aeronwy Thomas, Caitlin Thomas and Augustus John and, of course, poems and extracts from short stories and Under Milk Wood by Dylan.
The readings were carried out by Sue Crockford, Laurie Dale, John Harry, Harry Gardiner and Teifion Powell, with narration provided by Andrew Davies.
The narration and readings were written and compiled by Mark Lewis, collections manager at the museum, who was unfortunately unable to attend. The event was held in commemoration of Dylan's death.
All of the readings were excellently performed to a rapt audience who offered long and genuine applause at the end of the evening. Congratulations must be offered to all the performers who breathed true emotion into the wonderful words.
Highlights included Sue Crockford's rendition of a passage by Lily Smalls and Laurie Dale's singing of the sunset prayer by Rev. Eli Jenkins, both from Under Milk Wood; Teifion Powell's moving interpretation of Do Not Go gentle Into That Good Night; John Harry's reading of Fern Hill and Harry Gardiner's reading of Lament. Andrew Davies's narration was described by one audience member as a 'tour de force'.
Welsh artist John Uzzell Edwards, who attended the performance, praised the evening, stating that it 'demonstrated the music and culture of Wales and Dylan Thomas's invaluable contribution to it'.
It is hoped to repeat a similar event at the museum in the near future.
