Dyfed Powys has the lowest violent crime rate in the whole of England and Wales for the latest end of year period, October 1, 2007, to September 30 this year.

The volume of violent crime offences recorded for this period equates to 5,951 offences.

Ian Arundale, Chief Constable of Dyfed Powys, said: "We would like to make it clear to our residents, violent crime is down in Dyfed Powys and our statistics are correct.

"For the last year, we have had the lowest violent crime rate in England and Wales. Also we have the second highest detection rate for the whole of England and Wales for the same period.

"We would like to reassure people living in Dyfed Powys that it is a safe place to live and where there are instances of violent crime they are dealt with swiftly and appropriately.

"According to the latest British Crime Survey figures available (April 2007-March 2008), Dyfed Powys recorded the lowest levels of worry about being a victim of violent crime in England and Wales. Latest figures show that only 5.4 per cent of the population are worried about being a victim of violent crime.

"We hope that the recent media reports about figures being recorded incorrectly do not impact on local people's perception of violent crime in their area. Dyfed Powys is a safe place, we work hard to ensure that where crimes take place they are detected and the perpetrators are dealt with accordingly."
