Lawrenny's first appearance in the final ended in disappointment when Haverfordwest won the Duggie Morris Cup (sponsored by the Morris Family) for the fifth time after defeating the villagers by 63 runs in Monday's final at Burton. The win gave Haverfordwest the treble of the League Championship, Harrison-Allen Bowl and the Duggie Morris Cup and at the same time, preserved their remarkable unbeaten record this season. Haverfordwest scored 113 for 3 in the first innings of 20 overs. Karl Rhead made the major contribution to the total with 44, supported by Phil Kirkby with 15, Stephen Phillips with 15 not out and Danny Potter 14. In reply, Lawrenny reached 91 for 9. James Buckle with a fighting innings of 28 not out and Steven Lewis in an attacking knock of 26, including three 6s, staged a recovery from a total of 5 for 3. However, just when Lawrenny were poised to get closer to the Town total, Stephen Phillips took three wickets for one run in the last over to give Haverfordwest a first innings lead of 25. Lawrenny restricted Haverfordwest to a second innings total of 111 for 9 as Ian Jenkins took 3 for 23 with some controlled spin bowling and James Buckle 2 for 14. The bowlers were backed up by some excellent fielding, with skipper Robert Williams and James Buckle both getting key wickets with direct hit run outs. Once again Karl Rhead top scored for the Town with 38, before being bowled by James Buckle, and had a first wicket partnership of 42 with Danny Potter. Lawrenny wanted 137 to win, but had another poor start. Adrian Harries was run out for two, after a misunderstanding with Andrew Cole Senior, who followed Harries back to the pavilion quickly when he attempted to pull a short ball from Simon Williams and was caught by Adrian Griffiths. Town skipper Adrian Griffiths rang the Haverfordwest bowling changes cleverly to prevent a recovery. With the ball not coming on to the bat, the free-scoring Lawrenny batsmen could not get the ball away against the well-balanced Town bowling attack. Haverfordwest maintained the upper hand and Lawrenny were bowled out for 73. Christian Phillips scored 17 and Steven Lewis 15, before Lewis was bowled by Stephen Phillips, for whom revenge was sweet after being hit for five 6s by Lewis in one over during a recent league match. Stephen Phillips ended with 3 for 12, Adrian Griffiths took 2 for 13 and Phil Kirkby mopped up the Lawrenny innings with 3 for 9. Karl Rhead received the Winston Griffiths man-of-the-match award after being nominated by adjudicators W. M. B. and Brian Griffiths for his batting performances for Haverfordwest. It has been a great season for Haverfordwest, who confirmed their status as being the best team in Pembrokeshire this season.
