The first round of the Duggie Morris Cup has produced two shock results to date, with Llangwm defeating Haverfordwest by four wickets and Narberth defeating visiting Carew by the same margin.

Carew reached a total of 138 for 5 at Narberth, but failed to make the most of the first wicket partnership of 87 between Ian Sefton, who scored 44, and Nick Scourfield, who was run out for 43.

On their departure, the innings lost some of its momentum which was not regained until Aled Davies had a breezy innings of 22.

Wayne Howells, Gary Hughes and Greg Morris were the wicket-takers for Narberth, who timed their response to perfection with consistent batting down the order.

Opener Asher Stanford set the scene with his quick 20, Marc Hughes reached 11, Richard Adams had an attacking innings of 26 and Ceri Jones threw his bat at everything to score 25.

Michael Scale kept his cool at the other end with a cultured 31 not out to guide Narberth to a winning total of 139 for 6 with some help from Wayne Howells with 18 not out.

Simon Wood picked up two wickets and there was one wicket each for Darren Thomas and Robert Scourfield.

The runs flowed at Llangwm where the visitors, Haverfordwest, totalled 166 for 5. Opener Karl Rhead scored 62, supported by his opening partner Andrew Phillips with 26. Phil Sutton chipped in with 12, as did Phil Kirkby with 18 and Dai Davies with 31 not out ensured that the Llangwm team was set a big target.

Andrew Phillips took 3 for 24 and Martin Inward 2 for 36.

George Thomas threw the text-book away for the early part of his innings and then settled down to his normal style to score 47, before being bowled by Stephen Phillips. Andrew Harries attacked the bowling with relish to reach 38 with five 6s and a four, Alastair Platten supported with 14 and William Beresford, who had not picked up a bat previously this season, scored 34 not out with four 6s and a four. Skipper Darren Brick scored 10 with two scoring shots and Beresford had the pleasure of hitting the winning four.

Hook had a comfortable 10 wickets win at Kilgetty, after restricting the home team to 87 for 7. Ron Hurst top scored before retiring hurt with a leg injury. He was batting with his brother Allen at the time and Allen had the misfortune to snap his Achilles tendon. Allen Hurst was taken to Withybush Hospital for treatment.

The only other batsmen in double figures were Mike Johns with 15, Craig Hurst with 12 and Steve Merchant with 10.

Hook openers Matthew Rowlands and Mick Haltam raced to 88 without loss in the 13th over, with Haltam on 53 not out and Rowlands 32 not out.
