Drop in at the Dock is a peer-led community support group based in Pembroke Dock.
The group was developed by Gavin Wainwright who approached Communities First when he identified a need for a support group for people in recovery from substance misuse, and or suffering from mental health problems.
Due to the funding from Communities First and their links to the St. Johns Community Centre, Drop in at the Dock was launched in September 2015 with the aims of the group to reduce social isolation by providing a safe environment for people in recovery from any difficulties that they may be experiencing in their lives.
The project is supported by committed volunteers - Alex Major, Darren Lee Davies and John Cox with the recent addition of two further volunteers Louise Davies and Gertrude Bleasedale.
The volunteers that work for Drop in at the Dock have had their own experiences of either substance misuse and or mental health issues, so can provide an empathetic and practical approach which is fundamental to a peer led support group and they have also completed valuable training that has been facilitated through Communities First in partnership with DDAS, Pembrokeshire National Coastal Park Authority (PNCPA) the REACH programme and West Wales Action for Mental Health (WWAMH).
The volunteers have key skills that will support future plans involving the delivery of therapeutic interventions which include a structured programme to support those in recovery, an art therapy group, adult education, Qi gong and peer mentoring of ex-offenders.
Presently, Drop in at the Dock is open to anyone in Pembroke Dock and surrounding areas on a Monday from 12.30-4.30 in St. Johns Churcg Community Hall, Church Street. Pembroke Dock. Anyone who would like to go to the group can simply turn up or ring Gavin on 07817668893.
The group would also like to thank Natalie Lang from Pembrokeshire Communities First as they have supported the group to develop. Ben Lloyd for his art classes and mentoring for the upcoming art exhibition this June at Oriel y Parc, St. Davids, on June 27, as well as St Johns Church Pembroke Dock.
