With icy roads a common feature in the mornings this month Dyfed Powys Police are reminding drivers to slow down and drive with extra caution.
Chief Inspector Steve Matchett, who is responsible for Roads Policing in Dyfed Powys, said: "If you have removed ice from your windscreen there is likely to be ice on the roads, remember to drive carefully, slowly and leaving plenty of room from the car in front of you. Also remember to keep your windscreen wash topped up. This time of year windscreens can get very dirty very quickly."
There are a few tips for driving on icy roads: slow down, steer gently and avoid harsh braking or acceleration; leave a bigger gap between you and the car in front; look ahead and keep an eye on other cars, try to anticipate any icy spots; if your wheels spin when you pull off, try second gear; if you do skid, don't brake harshly, ease off the accelerator and turn into the skid; if you do travel across black ice and the steering feels light, don't brake, just ease off the accelerator.
Also when the weather is cold check your car battery and the condition of your tyres. Make sure they have a deep tread and are properly inflated.
Chief Inspector Matchett added: "There are lots of narrow, winding roads in Dyfed Powys, when roads are icy slow down and take extra caution otherwise you could end up in a collision."
