More than 400 people were arrested due to the zero-tolerance drink-drive campaign launched by the four Welsh police forces. During the month long operation, a total of 6,857 breath tests were administered. North Wales Police carried out 2,238 breathtests which resulted in 95 positives. Across the Dyfed Powys area, there were 46 positives from the 1,038 tests administered. In South Wales, a total of 186 drivers tested positive out of the 1,153 tests, while in Gwent the figure was 89 positives from 2,028 tests. The four Welsh forces have been stepping up the pressure this summer to deter people from driving vehicles whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Despite previous campaigns, people are still being killed or seriously injured as a direct result of this reckless practice. Any amount of alcohol or drugs in the body can affect a person's driving ability and judgement. Chief Inspector Phil Davies, of Dyfed Powys Police, said: "We're still concerned about the overall percentage of motorists who continue to flout the law and cause a danger to other road users even though it is positive to see that numbers are decreasing. "We cannot afford to be complacent and Dyfed Powys will continue to enforce throughout the year as well as working with our partners to drive home the message of anti drink/drug driving."
