There were double celebrations at the Hywel Dda Centre, Whitland, recently, with the official opening of the new extension as well as celebrating 20 years since the opening of the centre in 1985. The extension was designed by architect David Thomas, of Talgarreg, near Llandysul, who designed the original design award building in 1985. The new extension has been built by Salem Construction, St. Clears. County Clr. Roy Llewellyn, chairman of Cymdeithas Genedlaethol Hywel Dda, welcomed guests and thanked everyone who had been involved with this project. Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member, Clr. Clive Scourfield, officially opened the centre. Miss Lowri Jenkins then presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs. Scourfield. Pupils from Whitland Primary and Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Taf provided entertainment in the open air at the front of the centre. Mr. Arwel John had visited the schools prior to the opening day and helped pupils to prepare work on the Laws of Hywel Dda. With the help of their teachers, pupils performed this work in song and drama. Funding for this scheme was via Carmarthenshire County Council, and included grants through the Rural Services and Thematics Programme (RSTP - European Objective 1 money), the Community Fund, the Welsh Development Agency, the Welsh Assembly Government, Community Enterprise Wales and the support of Antur Cwm Taf/Tywi. The buffet was sponsored by Castell Howell Foods Ltd. The caterers were Harries, of Whitland.
