There is a new character around to help combat the problem of drink-driving. DES, the designated driver, can be a male or female friend, workmate, relative or you. DES is anyone who chooses to be the non-drinking member of your group or party when going out for the night or when having friends around for a meal.

With the Christmas period fast approaching, the Police in Pembrokeshire will be paying extra vigilance to the problems of drinking and driving in the county.

Inspector Steve Mathchett, of the Pembrokeshire Division Roads Policing Unit, said: "DES is the best friend you can be or have, he or she can save lives, stop you getting a criminal record and you can get home safely after a night out. Each year in the UK, 100,000 drivers are convicted of drink-drive offences, with 15 per cent of them losing their jobs. All we are asking is 'Don't become a statistic - Be a DES'."

So DES is here to help you by staying off the booze, and he or she should never be encouraged to 'have just one'.

To promote DES, which is a part of the activities of The Portman Group, pubs and clubs around Pembrokeshire have been given promotional material, including much sought-after key rings and baseball caps. Information about DES can also be obtained from any police station.
