Pembrokeshire patients awaiting keyhole surgery at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, will soon be able to benefit from state-of-the-art equipment donated by two county-based organisations. Pembrokeshire in Business Ltd and Withybush Hospital League of Friends have presented the hospital's main theatre department with a new laparoscopic camera system for use in general surgery. Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive surgery or keyhole surgery, is a modern technique in which operations are performed through much smaller incisions than traditional surgery using tiny cameras. The new equipment will enable consultants to undertake more complex laparoscopic surgery and, it is hoped, will enable operations in newer fields such as obesity in the future. Said consultant of general surgery Mr. Ken Harries: "This is a good example of local businesses and voluntary fund-raising organisations working together to improve patient care in Pembrokeshire. We would like to thank both of these Pembrokeshire-based organisations for their generosity in presenting us with this new equipment which will undoubtedly benefit a large number of Pembrokeshire patients in the months and years ahead."

Pictured with the new equipment is consultant general surgeon Mr. Harries, senior nurse for theatres and DSU Helen George, general surgery Sister Sally Leyshon-Owen, Les Griffiths with members of Withybush Hospital League of Friends and chairman of Pembrokeshire in Business Terry Rees with other members of the group, Marcia James, David Lewis, David Edwards and Bob Jones.
