Police are appealing for witnesses after a live dog was thrown from the top of the A477 Stepaside bypass bridge at the weekend.

The brindle coloured lurcher/greyhound dog was thrown onto the main road below sometime overnight on Saturday. The dog was then hit by at least one vehicle. It had no visible ID or collar. The dog's body was recovered by council workers. The RSPCA have been informed.

Police are anxious to trace people who crossed the bridge that night or anybody who may have seen people with a dog of the same description in the vicinity.

Witnesses are asked to contact PC244 Paul Rees on 0845 330 2000.
