THE Rotary Club of Tenby were very pleased recently to welcome District Governor David Wiltshire as guest speaker to the July dinner meeting. District Governor David, whose area covers all of South and West Wales, will visit all 74 Rotary Clubs in the area during his year of office, and Tenby Rotarians were very pleased to host him, during his first month in office. DG David began his talk by warmly congratulating the Tenby club for their efforts in both the local and world community. He had earlier that day visited Tenby Infants School, along with Rotary Club of Tenby president, Graham Fry, and treasurer, Don Ramsay, and noted the excellent relationships, in particular, that the club had built with local schools. He went on to talk of Rotary's efforts and objectives, highlighting the issues and programmes that were discussed at the Rotary International Conference in Anaheim. Polio Eradication, he said, remained the goal worldwide, and that objective started by Rotary, who had so far spent £500 million on, was very close. David went on to talk of Mercy Ships, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, Caring for Young Carers and the 'Adopt a Minefield' charity - he said that in old minefields there were 20,000 fatalities a year, over a third of which were children. This particular charity had no admin costs, all of which were met by American Media Mogul, Ted Turner, and all donations were matched £1 for £1 by the United Nations. Membership remained an issue for Rotary, along with all service organisations, and while congratulating Tenby on their strong base, he reported that the task for all 31,000 Rotary Clubs in the world, was to increase net membership by one new member each year for the next three years, this would achieve almost 100,000 new Rotarians worldwide, who would all strive to make a difference for our communities. In closing, president Graham, warmly thanked District Governor David for his illuminating and enjoyable talk, pledged the full support of the Tenby Club and wished him well for his year in office.
