Tenby made 10 changes to the team that beat Fishguard last Wednesday and gave some of the up-coming youngsters a run in the first team against Maesteg in the last game of the season on Saturday.

Tenby were to finish in seventh place regardless of this result and felt it was time time to give those who had been knocking on the door all season, a chance to prove themselves.

Harry Bolton and Nicky Guymer of the youth team both put in solid displays at a rain-soaked Heywood Lane to warrant their selection.

With the young also came the 'old' as second-half substitute, Chris Brace, took to the field for the final time, before his retirement from the game.

The Quins had the vast majority of possession after Tenby had a man sent off in the fifth minute. Chris Williams was sent off for apparently head-butting one of the Quins players and left United an uphill task for the remaining 75 minutes.

This left the United pack weaker than their rivals and it wasn't long before Maesteg opened the scoring with a push-over try in the right corner, scored by Quins captain Colin Roberts with Robby Morris add ing the extras to give the visitors an early seven-point lead.

With a slippery ball, the fluidity of both teams' handling deteriorated, but the Seasiders managed to piece together a string of good passes after good handling by Bolton, to create space on the half-hour mark for full-back, Darren Rees to dive into the left corner and narrow the deficit to two points.

Maesteg responded immediately from the kick-off, when left wing Lyon Crowe found space on the left flank and barged his way over to score Quins' second.

The ball fell off its tee as Morris lined up the conversion and the resulting drop kick was fluffed by the number 10.

Then on the stroke of half-time, Maesteg scored again with an almost a carbon copy of their first try. A lineout on the right wing resulted in a ruck and the push broke the depleted Tenby backline and allowed the pack to cross and touch down to extend the points margin.

This left he scores at 17-5 at the interval, which, still left Tenby with a little hope.

Tenby went at Maesteg a little more in the second-half, but the Quins still had the upper hand with a man advantage.

The Quins' play was far superior on the day, with the Tenby players looking fatigued in the second-half after a long, hard season.

Although the visitors looked comfortable, Tenby battled away and on 25 minutes a great break away run by outside-half Neil Powling led to a penalty.

United opted for the drive, but couldn't get the ball to ground and Maesteg eventually cleared the danger.

The break finally came after good work from a Tenby scrum near the halfway line, from Justin Richards, who stormed down the right flank and laid off to Chris Brace; the forwards recycled well and youngster Harry Bolton found a gap to charge over from 10 yards to score Tenby's second under the posts.

The successful conversion put the scores at 12-17 with just 10 minutes to go.

Tired legs showed, however, and Maesteg capitalised with two tries in the dying stages of the game. The first came from persistent pressure on the Tenby five, with the Maesteg team ethos being 'if at first you don't succeed, try and try again'.

The Maesteg forwards finally found the opening, wearing down the Tenby defence to score the fourth try of the day.

With the last move of the game, Maesteg put their superior possession into points, with Nathan Williams passing the tired Tenby back row to score the last try at Heywood Lane for the season.

Tenby can now rest and start planning for next season when they will be competing in Division Three West, after the new league set-up comes into play.
