A group of children from disadvantaged backgrounds have enjoyed a week-long visit to Pembrokeshire, thanks to the support of the Port of Milford Haven. CCHF All About Kids is a charity that exists to give disadvantaged youngsters aged between seven and 11 from the South-East of England respite breaks and helps them to recognise their potential in a safe and happy environment. Some have experienced domestic violence, severe poverty and bullying, but these trips help them to escape the traumas of everyday life and embrace childhood. Between May 25 and 29, a group of 24 children stayed at the Pembrokeshire Adventure Centre in Pembroke Dock and took part in a range of activities, including coasteering, raft building and canoeing. Not only did the break provide plenty of outdoor opportunities, it also helped them develop new social skills, gain self-esteem and learn about the benefits of a healthy diet. The trip was rounded off with a presentation evening where the youngsters were given awards for their achievements. This is the fifth year that the Port has funded the visits, which Mark Andrews, corporate affairs director, says are hugely important for the childre. "These trips to Pembrokeshire offer them a chance to forget the problems they may be having at home for a while and take part in all sorts of activities that they wouldn't usually have access to," he stated. "It was humbling to meet the group at the presentation evening and it was clear that everyone had a fantastic time." Lydia Davis, chief executive of CCHF All About Kids, was pleased with how the trip went. "We are so grateful for the continuing support of the Port of Milford Haven for enabling so many children to visit the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast and to take part in such amazing activities," she said. "The feedback from these camps is consistently brilliant and we hope that the Port will continue to make these breaks available for many years to come."
