Tenby's successful summer carnival, organised by the town's firefighters, raised the magnificent sum of £3,500 for the Firemen's National Benevolent Fund. A cheque for the proceeds was officially presented to Divisional Officer, Harry Webber, by chairman of the local benevolent fund committee, firefighter Kris Steele, during the Tenby station's annual dinner at the Broadmead Hotel on Friday night. Delighted to receive the cheque, DO Webber described it as a 'fabulous effort'. In making the presentation, firefighter Steele said that despite causing a 'slight traffic jam' on the first Wednesday in August, the carnival had raised £3,500, which he felt was a 'great effort'. But he said it would not have been possible without the kind help of the community. Firefighter Steele made specific reference to the carnival's main sponsors, Tenby House Hotel and Kiln Park, as well as Chris Godding from PS Printing, who donated the posters and flyers. He also thanked all the local businesses for donating money and raffle prizes and the winners in all the categories for returning their prize-money. "We really do appreciate this and thank you all," he said. "I would especially like to thank Clive and Ruth, Merv and Marge, Oscar and Dianne and all the wives, partners and children for all the great work that was put in on the day," he continued. "I would also like to mention Sandra and Dai for the brilliant effort in selling our Christmas turkey draw tickets; they definitely helped boost our ticket sales this year." Finally, firefighter Steele thanked his fellow firefighters for all their time, help and support. "There would not be a Tenby firemen's carnival without you," he said, before proposing a toast to the guests in attendance at the dinner. Among them was the Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs.Tish Rossiter, who proposed a toast to Tenby firemen. "Tenby is very proud of its fire brigade," she said. "You go from strength to strength." Tribute to the firefighters was also paid by DO Webber who praised the great charity work, great camaraderie and great support from the firefighters' wives and families at the Tenby station, while chairman of Tenby Round Table, Dave Randall, gave a vote of thanks from the guests. Station Officer Dicky Lewis thanked his sub officer, Martin Hurlow, junior officers and all the 'boys' for their support over the last 12 months. He also praised firefighter Steele for his hard work as chairman of the benevolent fund. "You've done a brilliant job," he said. SO Lewis also welcomed two new recruits, Chris James and Sion Brace, and Peter Lewis, who had transferred to Tenby from Whitland, before Sub Officer Hurlow presented a gift to firefighter Steele and his wife Olivia to commemorate their wedding. Firefighter Peter Thomas, meanwhile, presented the 'clown award' to firefighter Chris James, the loyal toast was proposed by firefighter Jeremy Lees, while firefighter Richard James proposed the toast to absent friends.
