THERE were diamond wedding celebrations yesterday (Thursday) for well-known Tenby couple Mac and Mary Williams.

The couple were married 60 years ago on September 28 at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby.

The had met some six years previously when Mary, who hails from Tenby, met Mac from Saundersfoot, when she was nearly 15-years-old, at a dance at the De Valence.

Mary, nee Richards, still proudly has her wedding gown and veil, both of which were made for her big day, as well as congratulatory telegrams and the announcement in the ’paper.

“We got married on my mother’s birthday,” said Mary. “She was thrilled we were getting married on her birthday, but when the day came nobody actually gave her a card as we were so hyped up with the wedding.”

Mary had three bridesmaids, her sister Dorothy Johns, Hazel Caine and her cousin the late Margaret Wilding. Flower girl was Mac’s sister, the late Marcia, and page boy was his brother Roger.

A reception was held at Castle View, The Norton, and the couple spent their honeymoon in London and Walton-on-the-Naze.

The couple lived with Mary’s parents in The Glebe, which has become the family home for three generations and is where Mary and Mac still live.

Mac was a baker for 28 years at Strand Bakery in Saundersfoot, before being a postman in Tenby for 17 years, while Mary worked at Westway Stores.

The couple have a daughter Alison, and son Michael in Woking, Surrey, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

They will be celebrating their anniversary with a family party on Sunday.

“I am looking forward to the family all being together,” said Mary. “We are so lucky to have two lovely children with fantastic grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

When asked for their recipe for a long and happy marriage, Mary said it was ‘working together.’
