Yesterday (Thursday) was a diamond day for Kilgetty couple Diana and Wally Townsend, of Benmar, Station Road, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. After meeting at a dance in Diana's hometown of Seaford, Sussex, just after the Second World War, the couple got engaged in 1945 and two years later, were married on a very snowy February 22, 1947. Diana's father had suggested they cancel the wedding because the weather was so bad, but they went ahead as planned, with Wally arriving from Witney, Oxfordshire, just in time. "The wedding was at 2 pm, and my train didn't arrive until 1.25 pm," explained Wally. "We then had to walk to the church, carrying all the bouquets as my father was a florist, in blizzard conditions." The couple spent their honeymoon in Walthamstow, before setting up home in a small cottage in Witney where Wally worked as a garage mechanic. They later moved to Stonesfield where they lived for 18 years before moving back to Witney for a further five years. Then, following an eight-year spell in nearby Ducklington, they returned to Witney, prior to moving to Kilgetty in 1991. One of Wally and Diana's main hobbies is their garden and they still enjoy pottering around as much as they can and growing flowers and vegetables in their greenhouse. When asked for their recipe for a happy marriage, both agreed it was 'being in love' and 'sticking together through their ups and downs'. The couple have four children, David, Susan, Annette and Anthony, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with whom they are looking forward to celebrating their special wedding anniversary this weekend.
