A telephone campaign encouraging people to apply for housing and council tax benefits is being launched shortly.

Over the next few weeks, Pembrokeshire County Council will write to householders across the county alerting them to the future call, which will assess whether or not they can claim the benefits.

People not wishing to participate in the campaign will be able to do so by telephoning a designated number.

The exercise, which will be carried out in partnership with other local authorities, has been funded by the Welsh Assembly and the council will not incur any costs.

A spokesman said: "In the past we have enclosed a take-up campaign leaflet with each council tax demand, but the response has been disappointing.

"We hope that a different approach with more personal contact might encourage people to apply, especially in the current economic climate."
