'IF You Fall I will Catch You' is a masterful and imaginative debut science-fiction novel from West Wales writer and journalist Eifion Jenkins. Due to be launched on April 9 at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea, the novel will be WH Smiths' 'book of the month' in April and brings with it high hopes of success for author Eifion, who lives in Wiseman's Bridge. "For someone who has spent a career in journalism trying to say everything in under 350 words, being let loose on a novel was like a taste of freedom, sheer joy," said Eifion, who has previously written radio plays, short stories, TV comedy sketches and a social history of Wales. The novel, focusing on a boy called Gwidion who has unusual mental powers, is described as a 'myth for modern times' where all that remains of Wales is a small community sheltering in the shadow of the Preseli Hills. "It's not necessarily a book for science fiction buffs - there's a lot more fiction in it than science - but setting it in the future allowed me to explore some interesting ideas about Wales, its language and its place in the larger scheme of things and I hope that's made it a good, thought-provoking read," explained Eifion.
