Breast cancer services at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, will be improved thanks to a marathon walk which raised nearly £20,000. Sponsorship from the Pembrokeshire Dawn Walk will pay for a high-tech scanner similar to one already in use at the hospital's breast cancer unit. Mr. Bill Maxwell, consultant surgeon and the Pembrokeshire NHS Trust's cancer lead clinician, said the machine would facilitate on-the-spot diagnosis. The scanner, a more sophisticated version of the existing machine, will be used exclusively to treat Pembrokeshire patients "The test can be done in one minute which means that a patient will know in that short space of time whether a lump is a cyst or needs further investigation. It means that diagnosis and treatment can be undertaken at the point of care," he said. "The machine similar to the one which we will be buying with this generous donation has revolutionised the way we run our clinic.' Because the machine is portable, it can be used on the wards and in the operating theatre. The Dawn Walk, a 26-mile walk from Withybush Hospital to Cresselly Cricket Club, took place in May and raised a total of £19,450. Walkers gathered at the Cresselly Arms, Cresswell Quay, on Thursday, to present the cheque to Mr. Maxwell.
