A Tenby man successfully completed a sponsored swim to Caldey Island on Friday to raise money for two worthy charities.

Thirty-year-old, Daniel Murch, of 86 The Clicketts, swam to the monastic isle to raise funds for the Tenby and District branch of Leukaemia Research and a home for ex-servicemen with Combat Stress.

Daniel, who is studying for an Open University degree in Natural Science, raised a total of £525, and he is hoping that the figure will grow even further.

Accompanied by a safety boat kindly provided by Jim McGrath, of the Bush Inn, Daniel took just one hour 25 minutes and 54 seconds to complete the challenge, which was carefully watched by Daniel's mother, Shirley, who was time-keeper.

"We really couldn't have asked for a better day," said Daniel afterwards.

Although he struggled against the current of the tide at one stage and feared he may have to give up, Daniel, who had been training for the event for the last six weeks, was delighted to be successful.

"I think I was probably fitter than I thought," he smiled.

"I'm quite shocked that I've actually completed the swim and I was very pleased with my time as it was only five minutes longer than when I did a charity swim to Caldey 10 years ago.

"I would like to thank everyone who has sponsored and supported me, especially Jim and treasurer of the Tenby and District branch of the Leukaemia Research Fund, Watkin Lowe," he added.

Daniel is still welcoming donations and anyone who would like to sponsor him can contact him on (01834) 845051.
