Narberth had the kicking prowess of outside-half Simon Daniel to thank on Saturday as he booted the Otters into the next round of the Principality Welsh Cup with a personal tally of 26 points against Resolven.

Although separated by a division, the division three homesters showed just why they are tipped to gain promotion next May as they opened up a 15-point lead against division two title candidates Narberth.

In fact, it was Daniel who kept the Otters in contention at Vaughan Field, slotting over eight penalties, before his conversion of a late try by Aled Davies finally sealed Narberth's passage into the fifth round.

Narberth got off to a bright start, and almost took the lead when Jamie Bohata surged through, but the lock lost possession in the tackle as he crashed over the line and then Davies missed with a penalty strike.

A penalty from centre Phil Evans followed by two tries in quick succession from former Neath hooker Andrew Thomas - the second of which was converted by Evans - put Resolven firmly in the driving seat going into the second quarter.

It put the Otters off kilter for a time, but good work by scrum-half Chris Macdonald and half-back partner Daniel started to gain the visitors better field position, with Daniel reducing the arrears with two penalties to make it 15-6 at the break.

Two more penalties from Daniel after the change around kept Narberth in touch, before Resolven skipper Thomas again took the bull by the horns with his third try from a rolling maul off a lineout on Narberth's 22.

Evans landed the conversion, but then the homesters suffered a blow when Thomas was forced to leave the field with an arm injury.

Things were looking black for the Otters, particularly when Evans banged over another penalty, but they strengthened their resolve, skipper Simon Davies leading from the front, both in attack and defence, alongside Bohata, Jason Jennings, Gareth Bennett and Meurig Daniel, and four further penalties from the boot of Daniel, two of which were huge efforts from the halfway line, brought the visitors to within one point.

With just six minutes remaining on the clock, the division three (west) side were looking set to cause one of the day's upsets, but Andrew Bowen took matters in hand after Jennings won good lineout possession for the Otters and Macdonald moved the ball wide.

The straight-running centre battered through the Resolven cover before linking with co-centre Davies who nipped over in the left corner to touch down and put the Otters in front for the first time in the game.

Former Wales Under 19 fly-half Daniel made no mistake with the conversion to ease Narberth into the next round.
