Speeding and dangerous driving through temporary traffic measures alongside a scheme to introduce improvements to the busy A40 roadway have been listed amongst numerous incidents whilst the project has got underway.

Construction of the A40 Llanddewi Velfrey to Redstone Cross £60m project on behalf of the Welsh Government commenced under contractor Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd back at the start of the year.

With the team keen to keep disruption to a minimum, from January, the speed limit has been temporarily reduced to 30mph from Robeston Wathen roundabout to the west side of Llanddewi Velfrey Village for safety reasons, but after dangerous driving has been cited, the contractors are now considering further measures.

Following the road scheme’s first Local Authority Liaison Committee meeting, in a statement, the contractors have highlighted ‘notable examples of bad driving’, including numerous near misses.

One such example back in November 2021, before the 30 mph limit was introduced, stated that a motorist who seemingly overlooked the temporary traffic lights, drove through the working area, with one worker in high-vis clothing being forced to jump into the hedge on the verge to avoid being hit by the vehicle in question!

In another incident earlier this year stated that an articulated lorry overtook another that was travelling at 30mph, narrowly missing a works vehicle pulling out of a clearly-marked construction exit point.

Workers and motorists are now being encouraged to report bad driving and dash cams will be fitted to all Griffiths vehicles on site which don’t already have them.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Government said: “Griffiths regularly reviews the temporary traffic management arrangements and speed restrictions in light of the transient requirements for the project with consideration to minimising the impact on the travelling public.

“Any changes implemented are following consultations with the client and necessary stakeholders.”

The contractors are now looking at the second phase of temporary traffic restrictions to assist the construction work around Bethel Chapel, Llanddewi Velfrey.
