The weather was not very promising as we waited for the First 349 bus outside Sainsbury's, just after 10 o'clock last Saturday (writes P.M.). It was windy, it was raining and decidedly cool. But despite the weather, over 20 walkers were waiting by the time the bus arrived. These included Margaret and Bill fresh from their far flung travels. In the short journey to Penally, the Saturday magic worked. The rain stopped, the sky brightened; this was more like it.
As we gathered in Penally station car park, a few more walkers joined us, taking the total to 29. Paul gave the usual pre-walk briefing, highlighting the route. Then after splitting into our usual Speedy and Steady groups, we were off in the direction of the beach. Paul led the Speedy Gonzales group backed by Brian and Val. Barbara was at the head of the Steady Eddies, ably supported by Erica, Janice and Margaret.
As we reached the range, the Speedies wheeled right and tackled the short muddy incline up to the top of Giltar. The Steady Eddies continued to the beach via the re-routed path through the edge of the dunes. The Speedies paused at the top of Giltar to admire the daffodils and wonder how they got there. In the distance, the Steady Eddies could be seen making good progress in the direction of Tenby. So the Speedies made their way down the hill to the South Beach in pursuit.
We all enjoyed the walk across the beach. We were all feeling warm after walking for a while. We never tire of walking towards the town perched above the bay. The tide was right out, so the going was good on firm, wet sand.
The Steady Eddies turned left at Black Rock and continued along the path beside the golf course. The Speedies continued along the beach to the Water's Edge development, before cutting across to the bottom of the Golf Club access road. As they came up the hill into Station Road, the last of the Steady Eddies could be seen turning into Warren Street. So, as so often, we all arrived at the end very close together.
Refreshments were enjoyed at the Scout and Guide Hall in Warren Street. A very busy, well supported coffee morning was in progress when we arrived. There was a real bustle as the Guides and their leaders served the throng with cheerful efficiency. They were fundraising to support the running costs of their hall and we hope that their efforts were worthwhile.
Tomorrow (Saturday) we are walking from St. Govan's to Bosherston. The minibus will leave at 10 am prompt from outside Sainsbury's. Please contact Val to find out if there are any spare seats. For those travelling by car, please park at St. Govan's and be there in good time for 10:30. Refreshments will be at Aunty Vi's (Ye Olde Worlde Cafe).
