Sir,

I well remember quoting a cynic's view of New Year's Resolutions in an early 2003 issue.

I hoped that Tenby would prove me wrong. Alas, now in the New Year of 2004 the cynics have been proved right. "Blessed are those who expect nothing as they shall never be disappointed."

We know that there was never any intention to give us a Tenby Cottage Hospital. The so-called champions of our cause knew that well ahead, but politically did not dare to say openly. The supporters of the hospital were fed platitudes and eventually left stranded.

I have no doubt that the Assembly Member, MP, some of the local councillors and the officials of the local Labour group are relieved and the buck passed to the Health Minister. They have no further need to pretend.

But I see no sign of promises to lodge an appeal. It must be a new South Pembrokeshire trait to sit on hands with passive acceptance. Other small hospitals have been saved and valiantly serve their communities in other localities, Carmarthenshire, Cardigan, but not ours.

I weep for Pat Wright, Michael Williams and all the other true Friends of the Cottage Hospital. One can only pass on to some of their stalwarts advice on the next battles - put all those who were 'behind you' in this one out in front of you where you can see them and let them have most of the flak!

I. H. Jenkins,
