Miss Laura Davies, head of horticulture at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, was the guest speaker at the February meeting of the Tenby and District Cymrodorion Society. It was a privilege to welcome Laura back to her home town and the ex-Greenhill teachers present who had taught Laura were particularly pleased to be at the meeting.
On a day which was ideal for gardening, she outlined her special project in the garden, the development and maintenance of the double walled garden, which is of course a very significant and important feature in the park.
Her talk was complemented by a series of slides which showed the challenging task she and fellow gardeners faced at the beginning of the project some years ago, clearing the area of weeds and grasses waist high; then the careful planning and planting of the various areas with groups of flowers and plants, defined by colour and texture, coming into bloom at different times, all to give pleasure to the public who visit the garden every year.
Slides of the garden taken in the height of summer provided a feast of colour and were a delight, and those members who visit Llanarthney this year will be reminded of Laura's talk when they next tour the walled garden.
She then showed a selection of slides of the large impressive glass house which is big enough to hold a football pitch. She reminded her audience that the various areas inside represented the vegetation of far-away places and the climate was right to foster the plants and flowers one would see in South Africa, Australia, South America, California, the Canaries and, of course, the Mediterranean. It was wonderful to see examples of exotic flowers and plants on the screen.
Many members took advantage of the opportunity to question Laura further about her role in the garden, the international visitors who come regularly and its importance in the garden network of Britain.
Mrs. Suzanne Bevan, a keen visitor to Llanarthey, thanked Laura on behalf of everyone. She complimented her on her presentation and thought that everyone would agree that Laura was an excellent ambassador for the garden. Her enthusiasm for her job and the wonderful location was infectious and she, herself, couldn't wait to visit the garden yet again. They were lucky to have such a national treasure so near and people should take advantage of it.
The chairman of the society, Mrs. Trevena Vincent, brought the afternoon to a close by reminding members that the next meeting would be on Friday, March 6. This would be the annual celebration of St. David's Day at the Broadmead Hotel, Tenby, when, after enjoying lunch, members would welcome Hefin Wyn, the journalist and author, as the guest speaker.
